TIs your Sponsoring Institution’s policy manual fully compliant with ACGME Institutional Requirement IV.D.4.d – Accommodation for Disabilities?
A timely and highly relevant article was published in the December 2025 issue of the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, titled “The Disability Policy Toolkit: Resource Development and Applications Within Graduate Medical Education.”
Although this standard was introduced in 2019, many Sponsoring Institutions continue to struggle with compliance—particularly when relying solely on general employee disability policies that do not adequately address the unique needs of residents and fellows.
To support the field, the Docs with Disabilities Initiative (DWDI) partnered with the ACGME to develop a comprehensive Disability Policy Toolkit designed specifically for GME environments. The article outlines the research, development process, and practical applications of the toolkit in detail. The full toolkit is available on the ACGME website:
This is also an ideal time to review your Sponsoring Institution’s policies in light of the new Institutional Requirements implemented in September 2025. While policy review can be time-consuming, your SI Policy Manual remains one of the most important legal and operational documents your institution has when resident issues arise. Ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance now can prevent significant challenges later, including accreditation with a warning status imposed by ACGME.
